Monkeypox – A new viral threat to North Texas
Recent Monkeypox cases have been recently identified by Dallas County Health officials as not being related to international travel. The virus is spreading locally. CDC officials say the virus can spread to anyone through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact including:
- Direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox.
- Touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox.
- Contact with respiratory secretions.
The illness associated typically lasts 2-4 weeks. The monkeypox virus itself is closely related to smallpox. It is a enveloped virus and will be more difficult to inactivate than COVID.
Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 and has become endemic on the continent of Africa. Recently the World Health Organization has declared an outbreak of the virus which is currently affecting both Europe and North America.
